DESCRIPTION
The Red-backed flameback, Lesser Sri Lanka flameback, Sri Lanka red-backed woodpecker or Ceylon red-backed woodpecker is a species of bird in the family Picidae (Dinopium psarodes). It is endemic to Sri Lanka, only absent in the far-north. Separated from all other flamebacks except Black-rumped by dark throat, lack of a contrasting black horizontal stripe below the cheek, and its distinctive call. Male has a complete red cap while the female has a black and white spotted forehead. Known as Pita Rang Karelle locally, Associated with home gardens, plantations, and most wooded habitats except for dense tropical forest.
